On 20 May 1861 he enlisted with Company C of the 4th Regiment OVI. On 23 May 1864 he was wounded at the battle of North Anna in Virginia, and almost a month later mustered out with the unit on 21 June 1864.[4]

On 31 January 1867, Benjamin married Angenette Arthurton in Delaware County, Ohio.[5] They had two children, Emma and Katie.[6] He was a member of the William Street Methodist Episcopal Church, joining its membership in 1873. In his life, Benjamin would work as a laborer, a blacksmith, a policeman, and as one of the Directors of the Delaware County Infirmary.[1][6][7][8] In 1890 he was living at 76 Campbell Street in Delaware.[9]

Benjamin died on 9 April 1904 in his home after four weeks with heart trouble.[1] He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Delaware, Ohio.[10] Angenette died in 1925 and is buried with him as well.[11]
